Illustration Practice (MFA)

Illustration Practice is a public visual language inspired by the whole of art and design history. An illustrator's language is concerned with problem-solving and communication. With dynamic and changing production techniques available to the practitioner, illustrators are utilizing new media in addition to print to realize and distribute their ideas. The program provides advanced students and professional-level illustrators with skills and knowledge to successfully compete nationally and internationally and to contribute to the practice of illustration.

Who Should Apply

Students in this program are encouraged to contribute new ideas and directions to the practice of illustration, expand the range of the illustration work they produce and expand their visual literacy. Students are actively engaging in the social, cultural, aesthetic and technological issues tranforming the applied art and communication industry.

MICA's MFA in Illustration Practice applicants typically have real-world experience, but motivated, professional-minded advanced students are encouraged to apply. Applicants may include experienced illustrators as well as professionals and advanced students from related disciplines including but not limited to design, writing, fine art, animation, film, or digital media.

3. Illustration Practice (MFA) Written Statement

Applicants should submit a written statement discussing their artwork and outlining their interest in graduate study. The statement should include and address the following:

A. How your abilities and experience will translate into illustration practice as it moves into the 21st century. Where do you fit into the future of illustration?

B. Description of your ideal project, something that would utilize your talents as a visual communicator and engage your thinking about illustration practice in new ways.

 
4. Three (3) Letters of Recommendation

Letters are submitted online via mica.slideroom.com.
5. Proof of Degree or Equivalent

Submit transcripts to the Office of Graduate Admission in sealed, institution-issued envelopes.
6. Portfolio for Illustration Practice (MFA)

A portfolio of visual work is required from all applicants to Illustration Practice (MFA). This portfolio may consist of professional and/or student illustration work, or visual work produced in another discipline. Please compile a portfolio that displays your strengths as well as creative interests. Work-in-progress and collaborative works may also be included with appropriate and explanatory credits for all involved. A portfolio of writing may also be considered (submitted in .pdf format in the portfolio upload section of mica.slideroom.com). Applicants should submit a portfolio of 18-20 images (time-based work may also be submitted) via mica.slideroom.com.

Slide Room allows applicants to create an inventory of pieces and attach the following information: title, date, medium, dimensions and notes. Applicants may upload images, video or .pdf documents. 7. $70 Application Fee

8. Additional Requirements for International Applicants

A. Proof of English language proficiency.

If your native language is not English you must demonstrate proof of English language proficiency to gain full admission. MICA requires a score result on The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) of at least 550 PBT (paper based test), or equivalent 213 CBT (computer-based test), or 80 IBT (internet based test). MICA also accepts a band score of at least 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). MICA's institution code is 5399. Note: International applicants who have received a 2, 3 or 4-year degree or diploma from an English-language institution are not required to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score. A transcript from the English-language institution will be accepted in lieu of a TOEFL or IELTS score.

B. Certified translations of all documents.

Diplomas, transcripts, financial statements, and letters of recommendation must be submitted with certified English translations.
