Who Should Apply
The Critical Studies (MA) is open to students of all backgrounds with strong writing and analytical skills. Students will participate in collaborative and individual projects, intensive research and specialized seminars in visual art, design, film studies, performance, philosophy and critical theory. Students will develop vauable skills in research, writing and analysis with the goal of becoming creative professionals, art critics and journalists, or to puruse further graduate study in the humanities, fine arts or design.

3. Critical Studies (MA) Written RequirementsA. Statement of Intent - In 500-700 words, applicants to the Critical Studies (MA) should write a statement of intent describing their aspirations and objectives for their studies in the program and how it might contribute to their professional and creative goals. B. Preparation Essay - In 500-700 words, applicants to the Critical Studies (MA) should write an essay documenting their preparation for crticial studies, including their previous areas of study and creative practice. C. Writing Sample - (required) Applicants to the Critical Studies (MA) should submit at least one (and no more than three) previously written/published writing samples. Writing samples may include: research papers, creative writing, scholarly articles, critical reviews and curatorial statements, as relevant to the applicant's background and interests. Applicants may also submit hardcopy samples of relevant publications such as articles, brochures, catalogs and/or gallery guides if available. |
4. Three (3) Letters of RecommendationRecommendations are submitted online via SlideRoom. |
5. Proof of Degree or EquivalentSend transcripts from ALL post secondary schools attended. Transcripts should be submitted to the Office of Graduate Admission in sealed, institution-issued envelopes. |
6. Critical Studies (MA) Portfolio RequirementApplicants are not required to submit a portfolio, though if relevant to their background may do so. All portfolio materials are submitted online through SlideRoom. Applicants may submit 6-8 digital images or examples of time-based media for review. The portfolio may include but is not limited to: documentation of studio practice, personal work, community artwork or curatorial projects. 8. Additional Requirements for International ApplicantsA. Proof of English language proficiency. If your native language is not English you must demonstrate proof of English language proficiency to gain full admission. MICA requires a score result on The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) of at least 550 PBT (paper based test), or equivalent 213 CBT (computer-based test), or 80 IBT (internet based test). MICA also accepts a band score of at least 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). MICA's institution code is 5399. Note: International applicants who have received a 2, 3 or 4-year degree or diploma from an English-language institution are not required to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score. A transcript from the English-language institution will be accepted in lieu of a TOEFL or IELTS score. B. Certified translations of all documents. Diplomas, transcripts, financial statements, and letters of recommendation must be submitted with certified English translations. |
