Who Should Apply
The Community Arts (MFA) is designed for students with advanced ability in visual art. Experience in community-based work is a prerequisite. Additional studies in sociology, psychology, urban studies, or other related fields may further strengthen an application.
Potential applicants considerting the Community Arts (MFA) may also consider Teaching (MAT), which prepares students for careers as art educators on the primary and secondary school level.

3. Community Arts (MFA) EssayAll applicants are required to submit an essay that explains why you are interested in entering the field of community arts: A. Describe the experience and preparation you have which leads you to conlude that this is the field you would like to enter. B. Detail your preparation and development as an artist. C. Analyze/explain ways in which your preparation as an artist informs and influences you interest in community-based work. |

5. Proof of Degree or EquivalentSend transcripts from ALL post-secondary schools attended. Transcripts should be submitted to the Office of Graduate Admission in sealed, institution-issued envelopes. |
6. Community Arts (MFA) Portfolio RequirementTwo portfolios are required from applicants to the Community Arts (MFA). Additional information about how to submit your portfolio on mica.slideroom.com can be found below. A. Visual Art Portflio - A portfolio of 10-20 digital images offering an overview of your work as a visual artist. B. Community Art Portfolio - A portfolio of 10-20 digital images documenting your educational, professional, or volunteer experiences in community development, youth development, teaching or related subject areas. For each image uploaded, please use the note field to describe each project or event and the art-related or other problems the participants addressed in the work represented. If these images are not available, other materials may be accepted in lieu of the second portfolio. Applicants should submit their portfolio materials for review online via mica.slideroom.com. The system allows applicants to create an inventory of pieces and attach the following information: title, date, medium, dimensions and notes. Applicants to the Community Arts (MFA): please indicate in the note field whether the piece is personal artwork or community artwork. Additional technical guidelines can be found on SlideRoom. 8. Additional Requirements for International ApplicantsA. Proof of English language proficiency. If your native language is not English you must demonstrate proof of English language proficiency to gain full admission. MICA requires a score result on The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) of at least 550 PBT (paper based test), or equivalent 213 CBT (computer-based test), or 80 IBT (internet based test). MICA also accepts a band score of at least 6.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). MICA's institution code is 5399. Note: International applicants who have received a 2, 3 or 4-year degree or diploma from an English-language institution are not required to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score. A transcript from the English-language institution will be accepted in lieu of a TOEFL or IELTS score. B. Certified translations of all documents. Diplomas, transcripts, financial statements, and letters of recommendation must be submitted with certified English translations. |
