Proofreading Checklist

Please answer the following questions and include this sheet in your folder with your final paper.

  1. I have spent ___________ amount of time proofreading my final paper.
  2. I have checked for S-V agreement and proper verb tense usage
  3. I have checked for fragments, run-ons, and comma splices.
  4. I have an interesting introduction and a clear thesis statement early in my paper.
  5. Each of my body paragraphs has a topic sentence and stays focused on the topic (unity).
  6. I have tried to use "connecting" words in my paragraphs (coherence) and have tried to transition between paragraphs smoothly.
  7. I have used specific details to develop my ideas, and each body paragraph is related to my primary purpose (thesis).
  8. I have used a variety of sentence patterns in the paper (simply, compound, complex).
  9. My conclusion relates to my paper and is interesting. I do not introduce a new topic in my conclusion. The reader feels satisfied after finishing my paper.
  10. I have read my paper aloud to help me with proofreading.
  11. I have had someone else read my paper to help me with proofreading.
  12. I have used Spell-Check on my computer's word processor.
  13. I am aware of my own specific recurring problems, and I have proofread focusing on them.
