Network Topology

The college's network is based on both logical and physical star topology to increase throughput to each subnet or building. All traffic to and from the school passes through the school's firewall at the data center, which is also the center of the network.

Branches of the star comprise Bunting, Fox, Main, Art-Tech Center, Residential, Studio Center, Brown Center and others.  A Cisco ASA 5550 Gigabit firewall is the central device controlling access between the administrative network, residential network, Alteon, and the Internet.  Gigabit layer 2 switches connect each subnet over point-to-point 1000Mbps (fiber optics) cables to the data center. Within each building the speeds are limited to that of the Network Interface Cards (NIC) in the various machines, mostly 10/100/1000mbps.

Activites which Impact Bandwidth

These activities stress boundary router and reduce its ability to provide other network services in a timely fashion and may cause network delays.
  • Downloading music, audio, video files of all sorts, even for good reasons.
  • Sending large multimedia attachments via email systems
  • Sharing music, audio and video files over the Internet.
  • Some chat programs
  • Internet radio use

Network Details by Location

Art Tech Center
The Art Tech Center, Bookstore, 1210 Mt. Royal and Dolphin buildings make up the Art Tech Center subnet. The network supports 10/100/1000 mbps speeds

Brown Center
Brown Center comprises two different networks -- Brown Classrooms and Brown Offices. The connection speeds are 1000MBPS and beyond.

Bunting Center
The Bunting Center comprises four different networks - Data Center, Classrooms, Bunting 2, Decker Library, and The Bunting subnet.  The FireHouse, Commons Residential, Meyerhoff Residential, and Gateway Residential offices are part of the Bunting Subnet.

Fox
This network comprises 1229 Mount Royal (Bungalow), Fox 1st and 2nd floor Offices, Studio Center security and Station security. The client machines communicate at 10/100 mbps speed.  There is also a second subnet to serve classrooms and offices on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Floor of Fox.

Main
The Annex and Main network support 10/100/1000 Mbps speeds.

Station
The Station building is connected to the rest of the campus via a microwave link on top of the Brown Center.  The connection is 1000MBPS, making it one of the fastest connection on campus.

Residential Network
Each of the three large residential facilities are connected to the data center by high speed fiber optics. About 60 percent of the college's internet throughput (60 MBPS) has been allocated to the dormitories. The connection between the residential facilities and the internal campus servers is at 1GBps (1000MBPS) speed.

Students living at Sutton Place and the 1500 block of Mt. Royal Avenue are connected with broad-band DSL to the Internet. These apartments have full wireless Internet access.

The school uses packet shaper to filter and shape the traffic entering the residential networks.

Studio Center
The Studio Center is connected to the main campus via 48-strands fiber optics connection through the Fire House. The connection speeds are 1000MBPS and beyond.
