Purchasing a Computer

Office Computers

All requests for purchases of and upgrades to office computers should be coordinated through the Vice-President or Department Head in your area. Once the request is approved in your area, an email should be sent by the supervisor to the Help Desk with specific information about the computer needs in your area.

Operating Budget

The College maintains a budget for yearly replacement of computers maintained by The Office of Technology. This fund provides sufficient budget money to replace the most heavily used computers on campus every three years.

Capital Budget

The College budgets to replace equipment as it ages. Capital technology equipment (over $2,000) needs to be requested through the Capital Equipment Budget Process. Vice-Presidents in each departmental area are responsible for organizing and submitting capital equipment requests prior to the beginning of each fiscal year for departments under their management. Those requests become part of the overall capital technology budget plan and are reviewed and approved by the President and Vice-Presidents as a group based on campus priorities. Once approved, capital equipment dealing with technology is generally purchased by the Office of Technology to ensure competitive pricing and consistency of brand or type.

Microsoft Office and Operating System Software for Personal Use

MICA participates in a University of Maryland license program to purchase Microsoft software for the campus. As part of this agreement, faculty and staff are eligible for a “work-at-home” copy of the Microsoft Office suite of software and operating systems.. The most current version of Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc) can be purchased for a nominal fee at the College Store for both the Windows and Mac operating system. The Windows Vista operating system is also available. CDs for this software can be purchased at the College Store for around ten dollars.

Personally-owned Faculty and Staff Computers - Macintosh

The Office of Technology no longer provides services to purchase MacIntosh computers. Apple does, however, give educational discounts to the campus community. Go to the Apple Education Store  using the link in the sidear to the right to find the best deals on MacIntosh and related Apple hardware and software or visit the Apple Store in Towsontown Center. You can order and pick up your products at this location, and you will need your MICA ID to obtain the discounts.

Personally-owned Faculty and Staff Computers - Windows

The college does not have access to discounts or other special deals for purchasing PCs. We strongly recommend that you buy a name brand such as HP or Dell. The prices for those systems are only slightly higher than some other brands but the quality and service are superior. If you need help in deciding on or configuring a system for personal use, please contact the Help Desk.
