Themes and Special Subjects

  • Women in the Fine Arts: A Bibliography and Illustration Guide
    CALL NUMBER: Z7963.A75 A47 1991 Reference
    Look up an artist using the Artist Index. This refers you to articles listed by author in one of four sections of the bibliography. Good for finding older items that aren't indexed by online databases. "Ill." refers to black and white images; "Pl." refers to color images.
  • Earth Scale Art: A Bibliography, Directory of Artists, and Index of Reproductions 1984
    CALL NUMBER: Z5935.H3 Reference
    Features 32 artists who have devoted a portion of their career to earth-scale art, e.g. Christo. Articles and illustrations cited concern the earth-scale portion of the artist's work only. There is an index of artwork titles and some biographical information. "B" refers to black and white images, "C" to color, and "B&C" for articles that have both.
  • Encyclopedia of Comparative Iconography: Themes Depicted in Works of Art
    CALL NUMBER: N7560.E53 1998 Reference
    A two-volume set providing historical discussion of the themes as used in art (e.g., dance, fools, hair, light, vanity), plus a list of representative artworks. A bibiliography for each theme is included. Additional sources like the library catalog or the World Painting Index will be needed to locate a book containing the image.
  • The Oxford Guide to Classical Mythology in the Arts, 1300-1900's
    CALL NUMBER: NX650.M9 R45 1993 Reference
    A two-volume set with 205 entries, each dealing with a mythological figure and providing a chronological list of artworks (from visual and other disciplines). To find specific media, look for terms ("painting", "drawing") after each title. Additional sources like the library catalog or the World Painting Index will be needed to locate a book containing the image.
  • Contemporary Art and Artists: An Index to Reproductions

    Contains an artist index and a subject-title index to artworks from the 1940's to the 1970's. Call numbers for books that MICA owns appear to the left of the source abbreviations in the front of each book.

Painting

  • World Painting Index First Supplement, 1973-1980; Second Supplement, 1980-1989; and Third Supplement, 1990-1999.
    CALL NUMBER: ND45.H381 Reference
    The first volume of each set is an alphabetical index of painters, with a list of his/her paintings that can be found in the source books (designated by numbers) listed at the front of the volume. The second volume is an alphabetical index of painting titles followed by the names of artists who have works by the title. Look up the title, note the artist and use Volume 1 to find the book. A "c" to the right of the book number indicates a color reproduction. Call numbers for books that MICA owns appear to the left of the source abbreviations in the front of each book.
  • Index to Reproductions of American Paintings First Supplement, 1964.
    CALL NUMBER: ND45.M61 Reference
    Artists, titles, and subjects appear in one alphabetical index. Only the listings of artwork as they appear under each artist's name will indicate which book has the image. Find the work by title or subject and go to the artist's name entry to find the author and title of the book. Use the library catalog to find the location of the book. MICA does not own all of the books.
  • Index to Reproductions of American Paintings Appearing in More Than 400 Books Mostly Published since 1960
    CALL NUMBER: ND45.S55 Reference
    Contains an artist index and a subject index (p.636). Abbreviations in all capital letters to the right of each painting indicates the book that has the image. Refer to the list of abbreviations starting on page xiii; use the library catalog to find the location of the book. MICA does not own all of the books.

Magazine Illustrations

  • Illustration Index

    Six volumes index illustrations featured in a handful of major magazines, of which MICA owns Life and National Geographic. Subjects appear in alphabetical order. Index covers the time period 1963-1996. Most illustrations are photographs; otherwise, the format is indicated in parentheses. A lower case "c" indicates a color illustration; otherwise, it is black and white.
  • Art in LIFE (Life Magazine)
    CALL NUMBER: N7525.C55 Reference
    MICA owns LIFE magazine starting with its first issue in 1936. This index(two volumes) points you to illustrations in LIFE between 1936 and 1963. Subjects and names are arranged alphabetically. The illustrations indexed are in color unless noted with "bw."
  • Art in TIME (Time Magazine)
    CALL NUMBER: N7525.C55 Reference
    MICA owns TIME magazine from 1961-present. This index points you to the illustrations in TIME magazine's art section between 1923 and 1969. Artists, titles, and major subjects are arranged alphabetically. A "c" indicates color and "bw" indicates black and white.
  • National Geographic Index
    CALL NUMBER: AI1.N3 1989 Reference
    MICA owns National Geographic magazine from 1919-present and provides circulating copies from 1930-present. This volume (itself illustrated in color) is a comprehensive index to the articles published in National Geographic between 1888 and 1988. Every article features images, mostly in color. Look up articles by subject, author, photographer, or title.

Photography

  • Photography Index: A Guide to Reproductions
    CALL NUMBER: TR199.P37 Reference
    This volume has a photographer (artist) index and a subject/title index. Find the work by title or subject, go to the artist's name entry and there you will find the author of the book and the page number. Refer to the list of books indexed at the front of the index for a full book citation.
  • Photography Books Index: A Subject Guide to Photo Anthologies
    CALL NUMBER: TR199.M67 Reference
    This volume has a photographer (artist) index, a subject index and a portrait index. The portrait index is divided between men and women. All of the entries refer you to the author and page number of the book where the image can be found. Refer to the list of books indexed on pages x-xi for the book's full citation. Call numbers for books that MICA owns appear to the left of the source abbreviations in the front of each book.
