Susan Main

Adjunct Faculty – Foundation

Susan Main is an adjunct faculty member teaching painting in the Foundation Department. Her experience as an educator includes the University of Maryland at College Park, Montgomery College and St. Mary's College of Maryland with an emphasis in drawing and painting. Central to her philosophy as an artist and a teacher is the encounter between intuitive and intentional processes. Using automatic writing and image-making as generative elements, she develops layered, textural paintings suggestive of conversations, the intricacies of relationships and the dynamics of thinking. In the teaching studio, Main insists that students immerse themselves in the struggle to link perception, observation and conception with expressive materials. " I want each individual to deepen the relationship to their work: to act, reflect, and articulate the surprising events that form their experience.
