Glenn Shrum

Faculty – Environmental Design & Art History, Theory & Criticism

Spanning the fields of design and art practice, Glenn Shrum's work with light places him at the center of converging professional disciplines. A member of the faculty at the Maryland Institute College of Art since 2001, Glenn Shrum has received numerous awards for his work in lighting design, exhibition design, furniture design, interiors, sculpture, and architecture. Originally trained as an architect at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Shrum completed a Masters of Fine Art in Studio Art with an emphasis on light-space installations and history at Maryland Institute College of Art in 2008. Shrum's interest in the junction of art and design led him to establish Flux Studio, a multi-disciplinary design practice in 2006. Recent Flux Studio projects include the Legg Mason Worldwide Offices with Gensler, the Gateway building at MICA, Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, and the National Aquarium.

Prior to establishing Flux Studio, Mr. Shrum was a senior lighting designer at George Sexton Associates in Washington DC. While with Sexton, he worked on the lighting design of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth with Tadao Ando, the Chinese Headquarters of the LG Corporation with Skidmore Owings and Merrill, and the exhibition/furniture design for the Top Treasures Case at the Library of Congress. In 2001, Shrum joined Ziger/Snead Architects where he stayed until 2006. Notable projects during this period include lighting design for Villa I Tatti - Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies in Florence Italy, GKD USA Headquarters with Dominique Perrault Architecture, and MICA's Brown Center, as well as exhibit design for the Harley-Davidson Open Road Tour with Pentagram.

In 2004, with the support of the Nuckolls Fund for Lighting Education, Shrum established a lighting curriculum at MICA. Since that time he has overseen an expansion of MICA's lighting lab facility, corporate sponsorship of several projects, and the coordination of numerous public events for the local lighting design community.

In addition to academic and project related activities, Mr. Shrum was awarded a special citation for his service to the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America Maryland Section and a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for his participation in the Byron Overlook design competition. In 2006, Shrum was an invited juror for the Architectural Lighting Magazine international design award competition. An accomplished lecturer, Mr. Shrum has presented a variety of topics to local, regional, and international groups. Specific lectures include, "lighting of surfaces and textures" at the 2005 Lightfair international conference in New York city., "LEDs: Facts and Fiction" to the IESNA Maryland Section in 2008, and "Light-Vision-Color-Perception" at the Lights of Philadelphia Conference in 2006. A professional member of the International Association of Lighting Designers since 2002, Shrum was appointed to the steering committee of the IALD's Lighting Industry Research Council in 2007.
