Curriculum Overview

MICA’s curriculum offers a unique balance of tradition and innovation—encouraging students to build meaningful bridges among disciplines and approaches to art. Each program of study offers a solid foundation in fine arts and design, as well as challenging liberal arts coursework. See Programs of Study for detail on MICA’s curriculum.

  • Undergraduate majors in 14 studio areas and art history lead to the bachelor of fine arts (BFA) degree; students in any major can use the generous number of studio electives to create a unique program of study to support their career goals and interests through the addition of 11 studio concentrations; in addition, MICA offers liberal arts minors in art history, creative writing, critical theory, culture and politics, gender studies, and literary studies. A five-year BFA/MAT capstone program prepares art educators for certification in 48 states—graduates of this program have a 100% placement rate.
  • 11 internationally renowned graduate programs lead to the master of fine arts (MFA), master of arts (MA), and post-baccalaureate certificate in a full array of studio disciplines, community arts, and art education (teaching and research).
  • MICA administers the most study abroad programs of any art college in the U.S., and off-campus study opportunities include the semester-long New York Studio Program, academic exchange programs with The Johns Hopkins University, and other Baltimore-area colleges, and 36 other art colleges including Rhode Island School of Design and School of the Art Institute of Chicago. MICA students pursue international study in Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Poland, France, Scotland, China, Korea, Greece, Canada, Japan, and Jamaica. The College oversees numerous summer study abroad offerings in Europe, Asia, and South America, and two academic-year study-abroad programs: the undergraduate-level MICA @ SACI program in Tuscany, Italy, and a competitive summer residency for mid-career professional artists in Rochefort-en-Terre, France.
  • Through its Division of Continuing Studies, MICA offers credit and non-credit courses and programs adults and children, and intensive portfolio preparation courses for high school students.
  • MICA’s renowned Summer Pre-College Residency program provides rigorous studio and liberal arts experiences for rising high school juniors and seniors—with two distinct programs: at MICA’s Baltimore campus and in Tuscany.
