Disability Insurance

The purpose of disability insurance is to replace a portion of your income if you become disabled due to a covered sickness or off the job injury.

There are two categories of disability insurance:

  • Short Term Disability (STD)
  • Long Term Disability (LTD)

Short Term Disability (STD)

For Staff employees:

Your eligibility in short term disability insurance is based on your length of service with the College and dependent upon proof of disability from your physician. If your claim is validated, the College will pay short term disability, if you are eligible, for up to 90 days. For an illness, there is a five day elimination period and for an accident there is a zero day elimination period.

Eligibility is based on the following schedule:

• 1 to 3 years of continuous service- You are not eligible during this period. (See AFLAC Personal Short Term Disability in the Voluntary Benefits section to buy coverage during this period.) If you are not eligible for short term disability insurance you would be on non-paid leave of absence.
• 3+ years of continuous service- Your income is paid at 60% of full regular pay up to a maximum weekly benefit of $1100 through short term disability insurance.

For Faculty employees:

Your eligibility in short term disability insurance is effective after three years of full-time employment with the College, and dependent upon proof of disability from your physician. After your sick days are exhausted, the College will pay short term disability if you are eligible, for up to 180 days.

Eligibility is based on the following schedule:

• Your income is paid at 100% of full regular pay through short term disability insurance.

If you are on short term disability leave you will continue the status of, "Active Employee", which allows you to continue in the benefit programs. During STD leave, you will continue to receive service time without interruption. If you become disabled due to a covered sickness or off-the-job injury, contact the Human Resources department to make a claim for short term disability.

Long Term Disability (LTD)

You are covered by the LTD policy when the short term disability elimination period has been exhausted and your disability continues beyond that period. You are eligible for LTD coverage on the first day of the month following or coinciding with your hire date. LTD coverage is based on your salary and provides a monthly benefit of 60% of the basic monthly earnings, (not to exceed a maximum plan benefit of $5,000 per month). Social Security, worker's compensation, and salary continuation offset benefit payments if these benefits are paid at the same time.

Workers' Compensation

In the case of on-the-job injury or illness, the College's workers' compensation insurance policy would be in effect. You must report the accident to Campus Safety, Human Resources, and your supervisor immediately. Human Resources will then file a workers' compensation claim on your behalf.
