Security Alert 11/1/13

1600 block of Mason St.

The follwoing email was sent out to the MICA community on 11/2/13.

Safety Alert 

At approximately 2:50 P.M. on Friday November 1, 2013, a MICA student was walking northbound on the 1600 block of Mason Street. when she was approached by a unknown black male waving a semi automatic firearm. The perpetrator demanded her belongings and jump red pick up truck and fled the area headed eastbound on McMechen Street. The police has a person of interest in custody who was determined to be the operator of the vehicle used in the escape.

The suspect is described as:

A black male, 6' tall , slim build,short dark hair, in his early 30's, wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt
white T-shirt and blue jeans.


MICA Campus Safety responded quickly and continues to search for perpetrator with help from Baltimore City Police, but the suspect has not been apprehended. Baltimore City Police have taken the lead in this investigation and Campus Safety will support their efforts.

Although it is very early in the investigation, Campus Safety is working with Baltimore City Police to enhance our area patrols. Officers will be deployed on foot in the W. Mount Royal Avenue Campus corridor.

We strongly encourage all members of the MICA community to always remain vigilant, on and off campus. Immediately contact Campus Safety if you see someone fitting this description or acting suspicious.

· See Something... Say Something - Immediately report suspicious persons parked, hanging around, or walking through campus or your neighborhood. Please help us prevent something suspicious from becoming a crime by being extra eyes and ears for Campus Safety and Baltimore City Police. Call in a "tip" and patrol units will respond to the area to investigate.


· On-Campus Walking Escorts are available. Officers will walk with you between campus buildings or to/from your car. Request service through a lobby security guard or call 410-225-2245.

· Always be alert to your immediate surroundings and keep track of who is around you. Be especially vigilant in the evening and on weekends when there is less pedestrian traffic in Bolton Hill and on campus.

On October 25, 2013 at 5;10 PM, a MICA student walking on 100 Blk of Lanvale was assaulted and robbed. The Student was stuck and their phone was taken from them. Suspects are 3 Blk Males all in their 20's about 5'9. One was wearing a black puffy coat and a netted hat. The other two had dark color hoodies and blue jeans. Suspect last were seen heading down John St. toward the light rail out of the area.

-Don't allow strangers to approach or follow you on the street. If asked to stop or talk - keep moving away while you listen and watch to size up the situation. If you sense that someone may be following or moving toward you, abruptly change direction several times while moving quickly toward a safe public area or place where you know assistance will be available. You will see how the person responds, and by moving toward a place where assistance is available, you will be that much closer to help if you decide escape is necessary.

-Avoid isolated areas and walking alone; always use the evening shuttle when in service (Monday-Friday 5:00 pm-3:00 am and Saturday-Sunday 5:00 pm-4:00 am; last call is twenty minutes before end of service).
