Special Services for International Students

The Office of Multi-ethnic and International Student Programs
The Office of Multi-ethnic and International Student Programs, under the leadership of Dr. Frankie E. Martin, is a multi-purpose office that addresses the needs and concerns of students from different races, cultural backgrounds, countries, and nationalities. The office develops and coordinates programs, services, activities, and strategies for coping in a multicultural collegiate environment. Through these programs, students come together to learn about other cultures and discover how diversity provides a stimulating learning environment. The Office is a place where international students come for direction, information, dialogue, mentoring, and any other needs to ensure a successful collegiate experience at MICA.

The Office serves as an advocate to the MICA community on behalf of international students, working closely with the Offices of Admissions, Student Affairs, Residence Life, Student Accounts, Academic Affairs, Advising, and other campus offices. The Office can help students receive appropriate services including tutoring from the ESL specialist and the Writing Studio.

International Student Orientation
MICA’s Annual International Student Orientation Program, “International Connections,” provides a variety of important services to help new international students adjust to the MICA environment. Each year, upperclass Student Connectors volunteer their time to work one-on-one with new international students to help with the adjustment to life on an American college campus. In addition, Alumni Host Families are available to provide a home away from home and assist with adjustment to American culture and the Baltimore community.

SEVIS, Immigration and Visa Counseling
The Multi-ethnic and International Student Programs Office is responsible for coordinating all required information to the federal government required for the SEVIS system. The Office provides information and counseling to students regarding immigration issues, including:
  • SEVIS registration and updates

  • I-20 signatures,

  • Maintaining & changing student visa status, including program extensions, transfers, and working in the US

  • Optional Practical Training (OPT), Curricula Practical Training (CPT), and Internships.

Other activities supported by the Office of Multi-ethnic and International Student Programs includes the annual
International Education Week Celebration.

International Education Week is an annual event held across the nation to celebrate the contributions of international students at American colleges and also educate American college students about the global environment in which we all live. Each year at MICA, International Education Week includes programs to highlight MICA’s international students such as international dinners, an international student art exhibition, and foreign film movie nights.

The International Student Tea is another program coordinated for International Students. Students are joined by MICA faculty, staff, and students to become more acquainted with one another and discuss various topics of interest. The Tea is another opportunity for MICA to help international students feel more comfortable and answer any questions they may have about life on the MICA campus.

More information can be obtained on this event by contacting the Office of Multi-ethnic and International Student Programs.
