Studying at an American College
In this section, we've put together information of interest to international students considering studying at MICA. Click on the options above to learn more about Baltimore, about MICA's campus, about special services for international students, and about other students from around the world who have chosen to study at Maryland Institute College of Art.
Living in Baltimore
MICA is located in Baltimore, Maryland, a city central to the New
York/Washington arts corridor. The campus is intertwined within a
historic residential neighborhood at the heart of the city's Mount
Royal Cultural Center, which includes the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra
at Joseph Meyerhoff Hall, the Lyric Opera House, and Theatre Project.
Baltimore offers an expanding array of cultural resources - the Walters
Art Gallery, the American Visionary Art Museum, vintage clothing and
antiquarian bookstores, independent galleries and performance spaces.
In this energized environment, students live and work as members of
a community of artists.
Baltimore, a city known for its attractive, colorful ethnic neighborhoods,
is a most hospitable city for artists. It is a major seaport city
with a distinctive European flavor, and the home to a vibrant visual
and performing arts community, world-class museums, universities,
and medical centers (for more information you can visit www.baltimore.org).
Over 100,000 students attend colleges and universities in the metropolitan
Baltimore area, creating a youthful and lively environment (www.colltown.org).
Located at the heart of the New York-to-Washington, D.C., art corridor,
Baltimore is just 3 hours from New York City and 40 minutes from Washington,
D.C., by train. MICA students can also take advantage of weekly College-operated
bus trips to these cities. These day trips provide a great opportunity
to visit art galleries and museums, to shop, or just to visit friends.
The MICA campus is located in a tree-lined residential city neighborhood
surrounded by other cultural and educational institutions. Our 22-building
campus provides exceptional studio, classroom, and exhibition space,
and two unique housing complexes designed especially for artists.
To learn more about our campus, you can visit our Virtual
Tour.
Baltimore is the largest city in Maryland and is located on the Inner
Harbor, an estuary that leads to the Chesapeake Bay. The city's central
position along the east coast of the United States ensures long seasons,
a temperate climate, and generally sunny weather. Students should
be prepared for winters that are cold and blustery with occasional
snowfall and summers that are warm and humid. Spring and fall are
mild, pleasant seasons. Spring is a season of flowering trees, warm
days, and cool nights. Fall brings colorful foliage, with brisk weather
following a summer-like start to the season.
MICA International Student Population
At MICA, the international student population is diverse and complex. Here are a few brief examples of international students at MICA:
- Maria, a citizen of Spain who, until she enrolled
at MICA, lived in Madrid.
- Tanaka, a citizen of Japan who most recently lived in Seattle.
- Ji Hyun, a citizen of Korea, who completed her studies at an
international school in Switzerland.
- Fritz, an exchange student from Germany.
International students at MICA truly
represent a global experience that enriches the College community
and offers a range of perspectives on the world. Currently, international
students comprise 6% of our undergraduate students and 14% of our
graduate students. Countries of citizenship of current international

To provide a full picture of our international diversity, we have
also included a profile of those many students who attend MICA as
permanent residents and U.S. citizens, but whose familial and cultural
heritage is that of another country. Also listed are foreign countries
where MICA students who are U.S. citizens have recently lived and
completed their secondary schooling. Although these students did not
need temporary visas and followed general admission procedures, they
are listed below because they lend an additional international dimension
and perspective to our community:
