Graduate Portfolio Requirements
See below for specific information about portfolio requirements
for each MICA graduate program, including acceptable formats
for digital work. If you intend to apply to two programs and
will therefore be sending two portfolios, make sure each portfolio
meets the requirements for the program for which you are applying.
All portfolio material must be clearly marked
with the applicant's name, address, and telephone number. In
addition, submit a portfolio description list that includes
title, media, dimension, and date of each work.
Where applicable, portfolios will be returned only to applicants
who provide a self-addressed package with sufficient return
postage. MICA assumes no responsibility for the loss of or
damage to portfolio materials. Do not send your only copies
of slides, CDs, videotapes, or other materials, and do not
submit original artwork.

Community Arts (MA)
Two
portfolios are required from applications to the MA in Community
Arts program:
- One portfolio of 10-20 slides or digital images (in a PowerPoint presentation) offering an overview of your work as a visual artist.
- The second portfolio of 10-20 slides or digital images (in a PowerPoint presentation) documenting your educational, professional, or volunteer experiences in community development, youth development, teaching, or related subject areas. Please include an attached sheet that references the images, describing each project or event and the art-related or other problems the participants addressed in the work represented. If these images are not available, other materials will be accepted in lieu of the second portfolio.
ADDITIONAL
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MA IN COMMUNITY
ARTS: In lieu
of the Statement of Purpose/Artist Statement,
submit an essay that explains why you are interested
in entering the field of community arts:
- Describe the experience and preparation
you have had which leads you to conclude that
this is a field you would like to enter.
- Detail your preparation
and development as an artist.
- Analyze/explain
ways in which your preparation as an
artist informs and influences your interest in community-based
work.
Digital
Art (MA)
Applicants to the MA program in digital
art should submit a portfolio of visual
work. This may include digital and non-digital work; however,
evidence of digital experience is helpful. The portfolio
may consist of a combination of the media
listed below, but please limit still images to about 20
total. For time-based work, a maximum 5-minute reel should
be chosen for preliminary viewing. Longer works may be
included as supplemental material. For interactive works
that do not fit either of these categories, judgment should
be used in selecting a portion to be viewed. Please include
a portfolio description sheet
with an entry for each piece in the portfolio. On this sheet,
indicate the format for viewing, the original format of the
work, length in minutes if time-based, and preferred viewing
order. Acceptable formats are:
- 35mm slides (in a standard carousel)
- Digital images (in one of the following presentation formats: PowerPoint, browser-based or .pdf)
- Time-based work or time-based documentation of interactive or installation work (DVD is preferred; VHS is acceptable, NTSC or PAL) D. Web work should be submitted locally on a CD (rather than being Internet-based; a url may be indicated if a portion requires internet-based viewing; be sure to indicate clearly the start page)
For all computer-based
work, Macintosh format
is preferred, however PC is acceptable. Graphic Design (MFA)
A portfolio of visual work
is required from all applicants to the MFA
program in graphic design. This portfolio may
consist of professional and/or student design
work, or visual work produced in another discipline.
A portfolio of writing may also be considered.
The portfolio may include one or more of the
following:
- No more than 20 35mm slides,
- One CD-Rom of digital work,
- One DVD, no more than 10 minutes total running time,
- Printed samples that fit within a standard business folder,
- Booklet presenting printouts of images from various media, sized to fit within a standard business folder,
- Samples of published or unpublished writing.
Portfolios will not be returned.
Do not send rare or original material. Do not
send oversized works. Although applicants may
send works in a number of media, we encourage
you to edit your materials carefully.
Additional
considerations:
- If you are presenting Web-based work, please put it on a CD for local access.
- Image files should always be assembled into a presentation using Acrobat, PowerPoint, or Flash. Do not provide a folder of straight image files that will need to be opened individually or in preview mode.
